Navigating Forward: Empowering Project Tiny Hope

Like communities nationwide, we’re facing a housing crisis marked by a scarcity of affordable rental units. Rising rates and limited housing options have left many individuals and families grappling with substandard living conditions, couch surfing, or seeking shelter. Our community is in dire need of accessible, affordable, and adequate supportive housing solutions.

Doug Tarry Homes would like to provide an update on Project Tiny Hope – a collaboration between Doug Tarry Homes, the YWCA, and Sanctuary Homes. Our mission endures: to bring quality, energy-efficient, and supportive affordable housing to St. Thomas. Our vision entails 40 Tiny Homes surrounded by green spaces and community gardens.

Though we’ve secured the property with a generous $200,000 donation from Sanctuary Homes, there have been funding gaps causing delays. However, our determination to surmount these challenges and make a positive impact is stronger than ever.

Progressing onward, our plans encompass several strategic actions, including advocacy with the provincial government, exploring co-investment applications and grants from CMHC, and propelling a community blitz build. With infrastructure in place, a blitz build could witness numerous homes constructed in a short span, rallying our builder peers, suppliers, and trades to unite for a transformative cause.

Doug Tarry, President of Doug Tarry Homes, expressed, “We look forward to engaging with our builder peers, suppliers, and trades as we work towards realizing our vision of Tiny Hope as a community-based project addressing these affordability challenges.”

Amid these challenges, we rally the community to contribute to the Capital Campaign Fund. Our goal remains raising funds to cover construction costs for this transformative project. Every contribution, regardless of size, qualifies for a charitable tax receipt. We had hoped to take a walk down and Thank you in person but as you can imagine, it’s been a hectic week.   We wanted to send a HUGE THANKS for everything you did for us Jackie.   Starting a year ago, all of the endless questions, the pricing out of options, the advice and guiding us through the process.  And of course the beautiful Thank You gift that was waiting for us when we got our keys last week.  Joe and I enjoyed taking a break Monday night at Boston Pizza, after the movers brought our entire house from the storage unit.  And we had the pasta last night after a long day of unpacking.  Would love to know where you get the pasta sauce … it was delicious !

I knew our new house was energy efficient but not that much! At the time of construction, we decided to insulate the basement floor instead of me getting a cold storage cellar. We have a very efficient furnace with an ERV unit. It wasn’t that cold in December, but even with all the kids home for 2-3 weeks over Christmas, our gas bill was just under $40! Love it.

Shout out to Doug Tarry Homes for being a leader in the new home industry for wonderful construction and environmental consciousness.

 During construction, we had the opportunity to see our home at different stages–framing, drywall, cabinetry, and it was so exciting to see everything come together.

 Before closing, we met with the customer care team, who inspected the house top to bottom with us to make sure everything was perfect. Their attention to detail and care for our home gave us so much confidence in the quality of our new home.

We were into our new house yesterday! What a wonderful surprise to see the welcome gift basket!! I’m now living in my second Doug Tarry built home. When I bought my first home, I wasn’t thinking about resale, but being able to advertise a “Doug Tarry built home” really gave me a selling advantage.

This current home is actually my fifth new home I’ve lived in. I wouldn’t hesitate to build again with Doug Tarry. The standards for the home – insulation, framing, kitchen, plumbing, etc – are very high compared with other builders. This allowed me to put some additional funds into some extras, such as recessed lighting and hardwood flooring. The Doug Tarry group work very much as a team, from the home plan design, interior selections to sod. You are very much supported in the entire building process, and the follow-up for any issues after you move in is excellent.
